Or maybe just Harlem. Apparently it's blowing up clubs somewhere in the general east coast vicinity, which I'm sure is prompting a whole lot of "I told you so"-ing from the guy at East Coast Critics Are Biased; lyrically, this makes "Laffy-Taffy" look like Rakim. Puffy's apparently trying to paint it as New York's answer to crunk and hyphy, but... yeah, whatevs.

Nevertheless, I quite like it. I've been on it for the past couple minutes, and even though it's the goofiest, most inconsequential shit imaginable, I'm still kind of feeling it. For a start, there's the beat, which takes minimalism to extreme levels. The entire song is a drum machine, a stark, apocalyptic air-horn sample and Young B rapping like a 12 year old over the top, saying stupid shit about "Chicken noodle soup with a soda on the side." It's pretty much devoid of content, but still a whole lot of fun.

And of course, all the heads are going to miss the point and decry this as the death of hip hop, because you know, if you get righteouly indignant when you hear "Lean Wit' It, Rock Wit' It" then this is going to provoke you into violent outbursts. Which is completely missing the point. No-one is saying "Lean Wit' It" or "Chicken Noodle Soup" is the next Biggie or whatever; that's just ridiculous. Songs like that aren't meant to be classics. Complaining about their lyricism, or lack of, is like complaining that the Ramones have never written a symphony comparable with Beethoven. It's not the point. It's just a dumb song that you can shake your ass to. It's a bit of fun. Let it be fun.

What it does remind me of is Fannypack, but hipsters aren't going to celebrate it the way they did Fannypack. Partly because it's not as good, but also because hipsters tend to only like music like this when they can be assured that it isn't serious (unprovoked attack on hipsters... check). But even so, this has the same stark simplicity and the same enthusiastically amateur vocals that made Fannypack such an enjoyable diversion. I also like the way it feels like rap in its earliest days - a straight-up, bone simple beat with someone who could live down the street from you saying stupid shit over the top; it has no pretensions of artistry or endurance or import whatsoever. Apparently a whole bunch of labels are scoping Young B out, which is ridiculous. Check out her MySpace that is so ugly that it makes all those other ugly, ugly MySpaces bearable, and you can hear another couple tracks she's done, and they're pretty much completely useless. "Tone Wop," the other track that's apparently doing things, is entirely uninteresting. Young B does her thing over Timbaland's beat for Cee-Lo's "I'll Be Around," and it becomes painfully clear why "Chicken Noodle Soup" works; it does not try to be anything more than it is. "Tone Wop" has aspirations of being a real song, and not even ambition can make Young B enjoyable as a real rapper.

Elsewhere, check out this week's Singles Jukebox. All my contributions were published, whether because I'm that good, or more likely, we didn't have as many contributors this time round. I've got to shout out fellow Jukeboxer Barry Schwartz, too. After weeks of seeing him constantly bring it on the singles, I finally clicked on his name and discovered his Disco Vietnam blog, which seems pretty entertaining.

In other screw rock 'n' roll news, Casiotone For The Painfuly Alone's MySpace has the CFTPA track "Toby Take A Bow"... chopped and screwed! Heck yes! Check it out, it's pretty great. As for my screw... it's been a while, I know. I've got something good coming real soon... I have a feeling it's going to be one of the more popular ones I've done. I'm certainly liking how it sounds, anyways. So I'll try to get that done tonight, and up ASAP.

Oh yes - I've been hearing about a few problems with zShare - are there any problems downloading the files I'm posting up? Let me know if you're having any difficulties, and I'll try to work something else out. I don't want to go with YSI, and RapidShare pisses me off. Maybe I'll have to look at SendSpace or something
